The creator economy is entering a new phase of maturity. Social platforms have enabled creators to build audiences at unprecedented scale, transforming content creation into a viable business model for millions of people worldwide. However, the same platforms that fuel creator growth also exert significant influence over audience discovery, monetisation, and engagement. As creator businesses become larger and more sophisticated, many are questioning how much control they truly have over the audiences they have worked so hard to build.

In response, creators are increasingly investing in memberships, communities, newsletters, and other forms of direct audience engagement. These tools promise greater ownership of audience relationships, deeper fan engagement, and more predictable revenue streams. Yet moving beyond platform dependency is not straightforward. Social platforms remain the primary engines of audience acquisition, while direct monetisation continues to appeal to only a minority of consumers.

This report explores the rise of audience ownership strategies across the creator economy. Combining creator and consumer data with analysis of emerging membership models, it examines why creators are seeking greater control, how platforms are responding, and why the future creator business will depend on balancing platform scale with direct audience relationships rather than replacing one with the other.
